DWCPD receives a memorandum from ANC Women's League on valentine’s day

The Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities (DWCPD) has committed to intensify awareness and the coordination of the work of government in the fight to prevent violence against women and children.

This comes after the ANC Women’s League this morning marched to the Pretoria Magistrates Court and handed over a memorandum to DWCPD and the Department of Community Safety in Gauteng receiving the memorandum on behalf of Minister Lulu Xingwana, the department’s deputy director-general for corporate management Thandeka Mxenge said the fight to end the scourge of violence is everyone’s fight.

“Today as we remember what happened a year ago when Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead on a day which is supposed to be a day of celebrating love let us also remember the many women and children who continue to suffer brutal acts of violence at the hands of their loved ones and say enough is enough.” Mxenge pointed out that the culture of silence among communities must end so that the cycle of abuse can be broken.

Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko also received a memorandum and responded by saying that government remains committed to building safer communities where women and children live free of abuse. The women’s league called for an end to violence against women and children and called for the justice system to ensure that perpetrators face the full might of the law.
