Western Cape Social Development on kidnapped Gugulethu baby

Kidnapped Gugulethu Baby Found: Department social workers to assist mother

The Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) commends the South African Police Services on their swift action in finding the kidnapped 2 month-old Gugulethu baby.

Social workers from our Gugulethu Local Office will assist the mother, who has been reunited with her child, with trauma counselling, and other social support.

It is alleged the child was kidnapped on Sunday by the mother’s trusted friend, a 32 year old woman, whom had been requested to care for the 2 month-old baby and its 8 year-old sibling, whilst the mother was running a shopping errand. Upon her return the woman had disappeared with the baby, leaving the 8 year-old uncared for.

Excellent detective work by the SAPS saw the baby found in the early hours of Monday morning in Atlantis, and the suspect was arrested.

The baby was reunited with its mother on Monday morning. DSD social workers will render trauma counselling and family support interventions.

The Department continues to call on parents and the public to be vigilant, and to always know the whereabouts of their children.
