Water and Sanitation on Nelson Mandela Bay dam levels

Nelson Mandela Bay dams slightly improve but still low

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has reaffirmed its commitment of ensuring that water systems currently in place in Eastern Cape do not fail despite current water challenges.

Currently, the combined provincial water storage in the province is at a low of 48.7%, a decline from last week’s 49.1%. During this period last year, the provincial water storage was at a low of 52.8%, a sign that the province is yet to recover.

Dams in Nelson Mandela Bay continue to remain low even though there was a bit of rain in the area. Loerie Dam improved from 30.3% last week to 34.6% this week, Haarlem Dam also increased from 37.4% last week to 39.8% this week and the only dam which did not improve is the Kouga Dam, remaining at 8.1%.

Dams supplying water to Buffalo City and Amathole District Municipality have also declined. Bridle Drift Dam declined from 39.6% last week to 38.9% this week, Nahoon Dam declined from 40.1% last week to 39.9% this week and Toleni Dam also dropped from 25.3% last week to 23.4% this week.

In the Chris Hani District, Macubeni Dam improved slightly from 79.7% last week to 79.9% this week, Xonxa Dam dropped from 94.7% last week to 94.4% this week and Oxkraal Dam is sitting at 56.9% this week, compared to 56.6% last week.

DWS is appealing to all communities to save water, encouraging water harvesting and use it sparingly.
