Water and Sanitation on Integrated Vaal River System stability despite modest decline in water level

The Integrated Vaal River System maintains stability despite the modest decline in water level.

The Department continues to implore water users to be circumspect in the way they use water and adhere to water restrictions imposed by their municipalities, despite the IVRS being in a healthy state this week.

The Integrated Vaal River System with 14 dams supplying water to the rest of the province and big industries is still in a good state despite the slight decline in water levels at 90.8% this week, down from 91.0% in the previous week.

Vaal Dam registered 70.4% this week, a startling 0.7% decrease from 71.1% last week. It registered 103.8% at this time last year.

Grootdraai Dam experienced a 1.9% increase, from 95.1% last week to 97.0% this week. It was floating high at the same time last year, at 103.8%

Sterkfontein Dam in the Free State dropped from 100.4% last week to 100.2% this week. During the same period last year, it was settling at 101.1%

Bloemhof Dam dropped this week by 0.5% from 93.8% to 93.3%, but it is still in good state. In the same period last year, it recorded 102.5%. 

This week, the Mohale and Katse dams in Lesotho maintained their stable levels.

The Katse Dam marginally decreased this week by 0.3% from 99.5% to 99.2%. in the same week last year, it registered 101.3%.

Mohale Dam saw an increase in water level this week, adding by 0.2% from 97.5% to 97.2%. In the same period last year, it registered a higher 104.4%.

The spokesperson for the Water and Sanitation Department, Wisane Mavasa, encouraged the public to participate in Departmental programmes and campaigns to enhance their awareness on water saving and to maintain healthy state of our water resources in order to ensure sustainable supply of good quality water to all South Africans.
