Veld fires are raging in the Waterberg of Limpopo

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre has been alerted to veld fires currently raging in the Waterberg (Thabazimbi) area of Limpopo. 80 000 hectares of have been ravaged by the fires but no injuries or loss of life has been reported. The Marakale Game Reserve, Game and Agricultural farms are the most affected.

We have already responded through the Waterberg District Disaster Management Centre by deploying officials with fire fighting equipments to deal with the fires. 250 people inclusive of our officials are already on the ground. A team from the Department of Local Government and Housing is also monitoring the situation and will do an assessment of the damage and recommend interventions thereafter.

The MEC for Local Government and Housing Soviet Lekganyane calls upon the people of Limpopo particularly in areas prone to veld-fires to be vigilant and report any disaster to the toll free number 0800 222 111. “Our Disaster Management Centres at District and Provincial levels have the capacity and the resources required to respond to any disaster that may occur but we rely heavily on the information and cooperation of our people. As we always say, Disaster Management is everybody’s business”, the MEC said.
