Update on impact of strike action on Home Affairs services

Pretoria: The impact of the strike action called by the public sector unions on Home Affairs services countrywide has been very minimal with only a total of 11.09% of staff members heeding the call to strike.

Home Affairs currently employs a total number of 10 735 officials in the immigration, civics and support services countrywide. Of these only 1 191 employees have not reported for duty as at Tuesday, 10 August. The majority of the 11,09% employees are located mostly in the Gauteng province.

Out of a total of 380 Home Affairs offices countrywide only four offices, namely Cradock, Mthatha, Piet Retief and Nelspruit had to close down temporarily on Tuesday due to the strike action.

Services at all our 72 ports of entry, land and airports have not been negatively affected with immigration services being rendered without any major disruptions. Contingency plans have been made for Oliver Tambo, Cape Town and King Shaka International Airports to ensure minimal disruption to services being rendered to travellers in and out of the country.

Home Affairs assures the general public that immigration and civic services will continue uninterrupted for the duration of the strike action to ensure both the citizenry and foreigners travelling in and out of the country are not impacted negatively by the strike action.
