Trade and Industry Committee concerned about member's 'misleading statement'

The Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry has noted with concern comments by one of its members regarding the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Codes of Good Practice. The comments in question are misleading the public.

Committee Chairperson, Ms Joanmariae Fubbs, said that during a presentation (yesterday) on the Codes of Good Practice, the Director-General (DG) of the Department of Trade and Industry indicated that the Regulatory Impact Assessment as well the public submission made on the Codes will be made available to the Committee.

But after the meeting, one Committee member issued a statement, saying they would submit parliamentary questions to the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Rob Davies, requesting that the Regulatory Impact Assessment as well at the public submission be made public. In addition, the member indicated they would submit a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) application if they were not furnished with the information.

Ms Fubbs said: “This is a parliamentary matter. The statement is misleading the public as the DG has already indicated that those documents would be made public. This is disingenuous of the member. I therefore do not see the need for the statement issued by the member (of the Committee).”
