Thirteen people killed in road accidents across Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District over the weekend. Three accidents claimed the lives of thirteen people, eleven passengers and two drivers on public roads across Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District in the North West Province over the weekend.

Nine people, eight children whose ages range between six and 13 and the driver of the bakkie aged 41 were killed on the N12 between Christiana and Bloemhof on Sunday night. It is alleged that the Nissan Hardbody bakkie was hit on the side by a truck that was travelling in the opposite direction at around 08h00 and overturned.

Five female children and three male children whose ages range between six and 13 including the driver of the bakkie died at the scene of the accident. Two other children were rushed by paramedics to Tshepong Provincial Hospital in Klerksdorp in a critical condition.

On Saturday night, three other road users were killed at around 9h00 when an Eskom bakkie drove into the back of a stationary Ford Bantum bakkie at an accident scene on the Vryburg-Tosca Road. The Ford bantum bakkie had earlier driven into the back of a horse-drawn cart outside Ganyesa.

An injured passenger who was sitting in the bakkie while awaiting an ambulance and two passengers who were sitting on the horse-drawn cart were killed in the second accident. Speed is suspected to have caused both accidents.

A 40 year old lady driver was also killed on the Ganyesa-Tlhagameng road after her Nissan Bakkie overturned at around noon on Sunday. It is alleged that she lost control of the vehicle. North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa who decried speeding as a major cause of accidents on public roads wishes to convey his condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones in the accidents and also wishes the injured two children a speedy recovery.
