Tembisa Hospital accommodation problem resolved

Tembisa Hospital management has finally reached an amicable settlement with medical interns over accommodation. Hospital management has agreed that the nine trainee doctors should return to Midrand temporarily pending the finalization of renovations by contractors.

The interns were supposed to have taken occupation of accommodation at the hospital a week ago but they objected on the basis that renovations that were carried out had not been satisfactorily completed.

After a series of engagements with stakeholders within the hospital and outside, it was finally agreed that the interns should return to their temporary accommodation to allow the contractors to attend to snags and complete the work satisfactorily.

The hospital also met with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and identified further work that needed to be done. The HPCSA dispelled unfounded allegations that it intended to withdraw Tembisa hospital’s accreditation as a training platform for doctors.

The department would like to thank all the stakeholders for their participation in the engagement process and ensuring that a resolution is found to the problem. The department also like to assure the community that it will continue to support the hospital to ensure stability, improve relations and eliminate factors that have a potential to cause a disruption to services.

We thank all hospital staff members who continued to render services to the community during the discussions to resolve the problem.
