The suspension of the Area Commissioner of Durban Westville Correctional Centre is lifted

The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Tom Moyane, has announced that the officials of Durban Westville Correctional Centre suspended after one inmate fell pregnant, have been cleared by an investigation and have returned to work this week.

Commissioner Moyane said the investigation was concluded and found that the awaiting trial female inmate that fell pregnant while in the custody of the police without the collusion or collaboration of the officials of Correctional Services as earlier suspected.

He said investigation showed that the unethical relationship and sexual contacts between the female awaiting trial detainees took place in police cells in Pietermaritzburg. The alleged perpetrator of the incident has since been suspended by the South African Police Services and is facing criminal charges.

The Area Commissioner of Durban Westville Correctional Centre, Mr Zebulon Monama and Head of the Female Correctional Centre, Ms Manqele were suspended to allow an unfettered investigation of the incident.

He assured the people of South Africa that investigations will be conducted and concluded with speed to determine the guilt or innocence of officials alleged to be involved in security breaches, unethical relations with offenders and those allegedly compromising the procurement systems of the Department of Correctional Services. He also pledged to be transparent and accountable to oversight structures of our democratic government and to the public.
