Mr Justice Bekebeke has been appointed as Director-General of the Northern Cape province. I congratulate Mr Bekebeke for having been the preferred candidate for this important position. The appointment for the post is for an initial fixed period of 5 years with the possibility of an extension.
Mr Bekebeke is both an administrator and a seasoned academic who brings deep policy expertise and a wealth of experience to the administration. He also has qualities of proven leadership, sound judgement, probity and absolute integrity. We are confident that he will prove to be a worthy candidate.
Under his leadership as Head of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), he has been a leader at building a strong, effective accountable and democratic electoral system in the province. Mr Bekebeke has led with great distinction an important government institution whose work fulfils a core mandate of our democratic government.
Mr Bekebeke's successful and distinguished career has set an impeccable standard for public service administration.
In Addition, the following persons have been appointed after a vigorous selection process as heads of departments:
* Mr F Aysen: Head of Department of Sport, Arts and Culture
* Mr DH Van Heerden: Head of Department of Roads and Public Works
* Mr S Jonkers: Head of Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison
* Mr KS Nogwili: Head of Department of Social Development
We, as the provincial administration are delighted that we will have the chance to work with these senior officials.
Their enormous experience in creating a developmental state will be of great value as we continuously strive to advance the provincial government's developmental agenda.
I am certain that their collective will set a benchmark in ushering a better quality of life for all the people of our beloved province.
Their appointment is effective from the 1 July 2010.
