The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is saddened by the passing of renowned SA footballer John ‘Dungi’ Moeti

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has noted with a heavy heart the passing of the legendary Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates footballer, John “Dungi” Moeti. The department therefore takes this opportunity to send its heartfelt condolences to the Moeti family, friends and the entire soccer fraternity, John played a significant role in the development of football as a sport in the country.

The Department has been reliably informed that the Legend succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this (February 6) at home in the company of his family and associates.

By the time of his passing, John ‘Dungi’ Moeti was 55-year-old and will be best remembered for the role he played when Pirates won the 1995 CAF Champions League title and also as part of the Bafana squad that lifted the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. Capped 29 times for South African senior men’s national team and further featured for the Orlando Pirates FC between 1995 and 1999 before moving to SuperSport FC.

May his legendary and talented soul repose in perfect and eternal peace…
