South African trade statistics for July 2010

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) today releases trade statistics for July 2010 that record a trade surplus of R2.0 billion.

Summary

The R2.0 billion surplus for July 2010 was due to an increase in exports of 0.8 percent and an increase in imports of 8.1 percent.

Exports for July 2010 of R56.0 billion and imports of R54.0 billion resulted in a surplus of R2.0 billion.

Exports increased by R0.4 billion (0.8 percent) and imports increased by R4.1 billion (8.1 percent).

The trade surplus for July 2010 is R2.0 billion (surplus of R0.4 billion in July 2009) compared to a surplus of R5.6 billion in June 2010, a month on month decline of R3.6 billion.

The cumulative deficit for the year to date is R6.6 billion compared to R18.4 billion in 2009, an improvement of R11.8 billion or 64.0 percent.

Trade highlights by category

  • The June to July change (up by 0.8 percent) in exports of goods reflected increases mainly in:
    • mineral products increased by R2 413 million (23 percent)
    • vehicles, aircraft and vessels increased by R326 million (seven percent)
    • machinery and electrical appliances increased by R267 million (six percent)
    • a decrease in precious and semi-precious stones and metals by R109 million (-1 percent)
    • a decrease in prepared foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco by R557 million (-22 percent) and
    • a decrease in Base metals and articles thereof by R1 921 million (-20 percent).
  • The June to July change (up by 8.1 percent) in imports of goods reflected increases mainly in:
    • mineral products increased by R2 257 million (23 percent)
    • original equipment components increased by R 559 million (16 percent)
    • base metals and articles thereof increased by R453 million (19 percent)
    • products of the chemical or allied industries increased by R 449 million (10 percent)
    • vehicles, aircraft and vessels increased by R424 million (nine percent) and
    • a decrease in Machinery and electrical appliances by R568 million (-4 percent).

Trade highlights by world zone updating

The world zone results for June and July 2010 as given below are unaudited.

  • Asia: The deficit increased from R5.2 billion in June to R5.8 billion in July 2010. Exports increased by R1.6 billion to R 19.1 billion and imports increased by R 2.3 billion to R 24.9 billion.
  • Europe: The deficit increased from R0.8 billion in June to R1.5 billion in July 2010. Exports increased by R0.1 billion to R15.7 billion and imports increased by R0.8 billion to R17.2 billion.
  • America: The surplus decreased from R0.5 billion in June to R0.3 billion in July 2010. Exports decreased by R0.2 billion to R7.1 billion and imports remained constant at R6.7 billion.
  • Africa: The surplus decreased from R5.4 billion in June to R4.2 billion in July 2010. Exports increased by R0.4 billion to R8.6 billion and imports increased by R1.6 billion to R4.4 billion.
