South African Revenue Service (SARS) customs detains almost 27 000 counterfeit soccer jerseys

South African Revenue Service customs border control officers stationed at OR Tambo International Airport reported the detention of 26 984 counterfeit Bafana-Bafana jerseys over the past 11 days.

Various consignments were detained from flights coming in from Qatar, Hong Kong and China. Of the total detention, 17 970 football jerseys were destined to travel to Swaziland and Botswana.

SARS customs has confirmed with the attorneys acting on behalf of Adidas that the goods (destined for Botswana and Swaziland) were counterfeit, however the remaining 9 032 T-shirts confiscated over the weekend have been detained under suspicion to be counterfeit until the tests have been carried out by lawyers representing Adidas.

SARS customs would like to urge members of the public to contact us on our anti corruption and fraud hotline on 0800 00 28 70 to report any suspicious activity that appears unlawful.
