The South African Reserve Bank launches refresher campaign on Mandela Bank note Series

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) today launched a refresher campaign, marking 12 months since the introduction of the new series of Mandela Bank notes on 6 November 2012. To coincide with this anniversary, SARB has introduced a new security feature in the form of little dots that will now appear on the front and back of all Mandela bank notes.

“Enhancing features on bank notes is an ongoing process to maintain the highest level of quality and security. This is in line with international best practice,” explained SARB Governor Gill Marcus.

Bank notes with this new security feature will gradually be introduced from 6 November 2013. All current Mandela bank notes and the “Big 5” bank notes remain legal tender and will continue to co-circulate.

The refresher campaign will be publicised through television and radio advertisements, online media and social media platforms. Members of the public are encouraged to continue to look, feel and tilt the bank notes to check for a combination of security features.
