South African Police Service (SAPS) Constable and two friends arrested for murder: Lingelethu West

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) is investigating a case of murder against a South African Police Service (SAPS) Constable and his two friends. An off duty constable based at Goodwood CID is alleged to have gone to the deceased’s place of residence at Endlovini in Harare, Western Cape in the morning of 25 July 2010 to arrest him. The deceased, Mr Asanda Dondolo, aged 20 years was apparently suspected of breaking into the police officer’s motor vehicle.

The suspect police officer allegedly pointed the deceased with a firearm and hand-cuffed him. He then took the victim outside the house where he repeatedly assaulted the victim with a metal rod and a plastic cane. The suspect constable then allegedly took the deceased to Lingelethu West Police Station but did not book him in the register. He was joined by his two friends in assaulting the victim in Khali Street, Harare. The victim was then taken back to Lingelethu West Police Station for detention at 20h30 in the evening and then later transferred to Harare Police Station at 22h10.

The deceased is alleged to have collapsed inside the police cells. The paramedics certified him dead on arrival.

The constable and his two friends were arrested and charged with murder. They will appear at Khayelitsha Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 28 July 2010.

The post mortem will be conducted on Tuesday, 27 July 2010 at Tygerberg Forensic Pathology Services.
