South African Human Rights Commission meets all paries at Hoërskool Overvaal in Vereeniging

SAHRC visits Hoërskool Overvaal, calls on all parties to act with restraint and demonstrations remain peaceful

A delegation from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) today met with officials from the Hoërskool Overvaal in Vereeniging, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and demonstrators.  The Commission’s intervention follows violent protests at the school that erupted this week and called on all parties to act with restraint and to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful.

The Commission is heartened by the fact that the demonstration did not disrupt classes at the school, however, it did note the concerns raised by some parents about the safety of their children.  In this regard, the officials at Hoërskool Overvaal gave assurances that the safety of the learners would be prioritised.

Noting media reports that a petrol bomb was discharged subsequent to its visit, the Commission remains concerned about the impact of escalating tensions on learners and strongly condemns the use of violence during protests. The Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of expression, and the right to assembly, demonstrate, picket and petition, provided these rights are exercised peacefully and in line with the Constitution.

“The Commission will continue to closely monitor developments at Hoërskool Overvaal,” said Commissioner André Gaum.  “However, there is a clear need for broader discussions on the transformation of the public education system, including on the issue of language policies at schools at the level of both basic and higher education. The Commission intends to play a central role in this regard” said Gaum.

The Commission remains available to assist parties in facilitating discussions should the need arise.
