South African hostages released

The Presidency is pleased to announce that the four South African peacekeepers that were held captive in Sudan have been released. They are shaken but are in good health and good spirits.

President Jacob Zuma, who liaised with the United Nations, Sudanese Government and other structures to secure their release said this is the best Freedom Day present for the country and the families of the hostages.

He wished them well as they cope with the emotional trauma. He also congratulated them for their bravery and resilience during this difficult time. Arrangements are being made for their return home.
