A senior Department of Health official arrested for fraud and corruption

Yesterday a security manager was arrested by the South African Police Service (SAPS) commercial crimes unit when he went to the department to attend a disciplinary following his suspension for transgressions related to fraud and corruption.

The department intensified its antifraud and corruption efforts in 2009 and to date a number of senior officials have either fired, resigned and/or arrested. The effort is a multiagency effort involving various agencies of government and promises to eradicate corruption in the department.

Speaking about the effort of eradicating fraud and corruption, the MEC said, “We are improving accountability, efficiency and effective administration within the department including decision-making and management conduct which promotes integrity. Since the launch of this campaign, we are encouraging a culture where all employees, the public and other stakeholders continuously behave with and promote integrity in their dealings with, or on behalf of the department.”

Mr Lucky Dlamini will appear in the Durban’s Commercial Crimes Court today for a plea.
