Security forces in place to secure final world cup matches

South Africa's security forces are in place and fully prepared to ensure that the final two matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup take place in a safe and secure environment.

In the Eastern Cape, a number of VIP guests and a large number of fans are expected to attend the match between Uruguay and Germany at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium and all security arrangements have been finalised.

The Gauteng security forces and law enforcement agencies, supported by other key role players, are also finalising security arrangements for the closing ceremony and the world cup final on Sunday, 11 July 2010.

Fans in possession of tickets for the final match are urged to make use of park and ride facilities as well as other public transport and to ensure that they depart for Soccer City early.

As the tickets for the match are sold out, those fans not in possession of a ticket should not make their way to the stadium. Sufficient South African Police Service (SAPS) and South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members and resources will be in place to ensure the safety of teams, fans and VIP guests expected to attend the closing ceremony and the final in Soweto.

Certain traffic restrictions will be enforced on the N1 between Pretoria and Soccer City and in Sandton during the course of the afternoon. Traffic law enforcement authorities are managing these arrangements.

Air restrictions above and surrounding both stadiums will be in effect for safety and security reasons, as they have been for the duration of the tournament.

Air crew planning flights during the period of the matches and closing ceremony should check the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) website and adhere to the restrictions.

The security forces wish all four teams playing over the next two days the best of luck and thank all fans for their cooperation during the 62 matches already played.
