A North West Public Safety traffic officer stationed at the Koster was on Wednesday arrested by members of the Mafikeng SAPS Organised Crime Unit as a suspect for involvement in corruption.
The 33 year old suspect is expected to appear at the Koster Magistrates Court on Thursday. According to police, the suspect is linked to the case of his colleague, who was arrested in a sting operation in November for soliciting a R2 250 bribe from a Botswana based truck company.
The first accused in the case is out on bail pending finalisation of his case and is also on suspension from the provincial Department of Public Safety. He was allegedly arrested red-handed during the handover of a further R750 after R1 500 was earlier deposited into his banking account through internet banking.
North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa had during presentation of his 2010/11 Policy Statement and Budget Speech two weeks ago vowed that efforts to deal with fraud and corruption will be intensified in order to stamp out greed and corruption within the ranks if traffic and the police.“ This is the year of action against greed and corruption. Re tlile go feela-we are still going to clean,” Yawa had promised.
