SAPS National Intervention Unit and Crime Intelligence success: Drug laboratory and firearms

In a joint operation on Monday 4 November 2013, the National Intervention Unit (NIU) of Pretoria and Crime Intelligence (CI) members discovered an apparent drug laboratory in Fourways and seized narcotics with an estimated street value of R2.5 million.

As a result of information obtained and followed up on at approximately 17h00 on Monday, the highly skilled team of NIU and CI members raided premises at Cedar Lake, Fourways.

The following items were seized:

Narcotics

  • Crystal methamphetamine;
  • Heroin;
  • Cocaine;
  • Twenty-five bags of salt and isotone.

Firearms and ammunition:

  • Two 9mm Glocks;
  • Seventy  9mm rounds;
  • Three 9mm magazines.

Two men were taken into custody for possession of drugs and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Detectives will continue with investigations.

This operation is a perfect example of the good working relationship existing between the various police units of the South African Police Service (SAPS). It is also testimony to the trust that communities have in the SAPS to follow up on information on criminal activities within their neighbourhoods.

The SAPS urges communities to continue to come forward with information on illegal drug manufacturing and dealing. As a society, we have an obligation to protect our children and our families from the evil of drug addiction and drug peddlers who are only motivated by greed.
