Renewal of Pietermaritzburg on track

The long wait for Pietermaritzburg residents is finally over, as the R18 Million, Chief Albert Luthuli Road upgrade, was officially opened by the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Mrs Nomusa Dube-Ncube, together with uMsunduzi Mayor Cllr, Chris Ndlela yesterday, 18 December.

This upgrade is a turning point for this historic city and is part of a bigger plan which is the Pietermaritzburg Urban Renewal Project, which is aimed at re-investing in the aging infrastructure of this city. According to MEC Dube-Ncube, the provincial government is keen to see this city become an economic giant in the province and country.

“The investments that we have made into this city as government, are aimed at ensuring that this Municipality, is better positioned to utilise opportunities to grow its economy. In the next five years, this city should be a major attraction for investors, we are already seeing businesses around this city expanding, which bodes well for its economy,” said Dube-Ncube.

The development that has been made to the road, includes the landscaping of the area outside the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and the paving of the road with red bricks. The renewal of aging infrastructure in towns, is one of the key areas that can assist to stimulate economic growth in our various municipalities.
