Remuneration of SAPS members: 2010 FIFA World Cup duties

The mammoth task of the payment of remuneration to all members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) who were called up to perform duties during the 2010 FIFA World Cup is now nearing completion.

Just as securing the 2010 FIFA World Cup was the biggest major event undertaken by the security forces of South Africa, so too was the administrative task attached to the deployment of over 44 000 members of the SAPS the largest of its kind in the history of the South African Police Service.

Bearing in mind that every member deployed booked on and off duty repetitively over a six to seven week period (depending on their duties), over a million transactions had to be captured on the SAPS systems and then audited.

The auditing process was important to provide reasonable assurance that all expenditures incurred in this regard were appropriate. This is an important control aspect regarding significant values.

The SAPS started running payments to our members in batches approximately two weeks ago and anticipate that the last run will be finalised by the end of next week, which is by 10 September 2010.

The South African Police Service management was immensely proud of our members who were true ambassadors of their country during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.We therefore made every endeavour to ensure that the payment of overtime allowances, meals, subsistence allowances, travel expenditures, shift and Sunday allowances were expedited.
