Ready to serve and protect

As part of celebrating Women's Month, female traffic officers from Eastern Cape Department of Transport took part in an all female traffic law enforcement roadblock held on the N2 Amalinda off ramp in East London last week.

The road block was joined by women from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), provincial and Buffalo City traffic officials.

Held on the mythical Friday, 13 August, it was a demonstration of the bravery of women by showcasing their ability to provide a safe passage for motorists and gave a clear illustration of their commitment to deal with social stereotypes and the underestimation of the women's potential, especially in law enforcement careers.

"The main goal is to promote road traffic safety in general throughout the province in order to reduce road accidents, fatalities and injuries as well as combating road traffic offences by means of a multi-disciplinary 'zero tolerance' approach," said Transport MEC Ghishma Barry.
