Public service strike affects Casual Day fundraising

Learners and civil servants who missed the opportunity to participate in the Casual Day activities on 3 September are urged to support the campaign by using their Casual Day stickers tomorrow or any other day that will work for their organisations.

The campaign is largely supported by schools and various government departments where learners and government employees are encouraged to buy R10 Casual Day stickers to support the campaign on the first Friday of September each year.

The campaign this year coincided with the recent public service strike, limiting the ability to reach out to learners to affected schools and to civil servants participating in the strike action. By 7 September 2010, the campaign had raised R2, 022 830. A total of R17,7 million was raised during the whole period of the campaign in 2009.

The Ministry for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities appreciates the support that learners in public schools and all civil servants have provided to making this campaign a success over the past 15 years of the campaign.

We urge them to continue with this great practice of demonstrating concern about the various challenges facing people with disabilities in our own country by keeping their Casual Day stickers and making the R10 donation.

This is the easiest way of demonstrating our support and raising awareness around issues of disability.
