Public order police deployed in Umlazi

“We are extremely concerned with the latest surge in the NMR Taxi violence. I’ve have held high levels briefings with relevant stakeholders including top police brass. While consultations and information gathering continues, the NMR Taxi Route will be placed under a special police protection. Teams are already on the ground.

More police officers are set to be deployed in the route as soon as some logistics are taken care of. For today, the rank remains open for business,” said the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Liaison, Willies Mchunu.

Meanwhile, Mchunu has welcomed the appointment of the new South Africa Police Service (SAPS) Commissioner B N Ngobeni. He said, “She is a career cop with all the necessary qualifications, zeal and determination to succeed in her new job. We call upon all people of KwaZulu-Natal excluding criminals to support her. She has the full backing all SAPS personnel and the provincial government. We will support and closely monitor her work to ensure success in a fight against crime.”
