President Jacob Zuma has today, 7 November 2013, informed parliament that he has employed members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) for service in cooperation with the South African Police Service to maintain law and order during the national voter registration process.
A total of seventy five SANDF members will be employed in cooperation with the SAPS in the prevention and combating of crime and maintenance and preservation of law and order across the country during these important periods.
The employment is for the period 9 and 10 November 2013 and 08 and 09 February 2014. The expenditure expected to be incurred for this process is R 1 242 000.
The employment is in accordance with the provisions of section 201 (2) (a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
The Independent Electoral Commission announced a drive to register about 2 million voters ahead of next year's general elections. National voter registration will be held on 9 and 10 November 2013 and 8 and 9 February 2014.
