President Zuma employs members of SANDF to maintain law and order during ICGLR AND ACIRC Summits

President Jacob Zuma employed members of the South African National Defence Force to assist in maintenance and preservation of law and order during the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) and the African Capacity for Immediate response to Crisis (ACIRC) Summits.

A total of 330 SANDF members were employed in cooperation with the South African Police Service in the prevention and combating of crime as well as maintenance and preservation of law and order within the country during these summits.

The deployment was over the period 1 to 7 November 2013 and the expenditure expected to be incurred for this employment was R335 495.

The employment was in accordance with the provisions of section 201 (2) (a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. .

The summits were held in Pretoria from 2 to 6 November 2013, and attended by Heads of State, ministers and several diplomats from the Southern African Development Community and Great Lakes regions.

The emergency summits of ICGLR and ACIRC were organised by SADC and hosted by the South African government.

The President has informed Parliament in this regard.
