President Cyril Ramaphosa has on behalf of the government and people of South Africa expressed his sadness at the passing of former Kenyan President His Excellency Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi.
The government of Kenya announced today, Tuesday 04 February 2020, that the former President had passed away at the age of 95 following an extended illness.
President Ramaphosa has expressed his sincere condolences to the government and people of Kenya at the loss of the leader who served as Kenya’s second post-liberation president.
President Ramaphosa said: “Kenya and all of Africa have lost a pioneering leader who shaped the development of his country and of the continent in the early period of post-colonial independence.
“As the longest-serving head of state of Kenya, President Moi inspired new generations of Kenyan leaders and citizens to aspire to and achieve the success currently enjoyed by the people of Kenya and the broader Community of East African States. His legacy also lives on in the values and vision of the African Union whose predecessor, the Organisation of African Unity, benefited immensely from his leadership and vision of a better, self-sufficient Africa.
“It was under the leadership of President Moi that diplomatic relations were established in 1994 between Kenya and the newly democratic South Africa, laying the foundations for the strong bilateral relations our two countries and peoples enjoy today.”
