Premier Thandi Modise on death of fourth victim in Mothutlung

Death of fourth victim reopens fresh wounds - Premier Modise

The death of the fourth person in the aftermath of the Mothutlung water crisis reopens fresh wounds and calls for the independent police investigative directorate to expedite its investigation into circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of the victims, North West Premier Thandi Modise said on Monday.

“We are saddened by the death and wish to convey our condolences to the family that lost their loved one and appeal for calm. We wish to reiterate our assurance that no stone would be left unturned to get to the bottom of the allegations that the water pumps in Brits were sabotaged for the benefit of those awarded tenders for water tankering services,” stressed Premier Modise.

The Premier called on communities within the jurisdiction of Madibeng Local Municipality to support renewed efforts aimed at ridding the municipality of the scourge of corruption uncovered by the Ministerial Task Team that investigated allegations of fraud, maladministration and corruption within the municipality.

“We are more than determined for the benefit of our communities to implement recommendations of the report that were obstructed and opposed from within the municipality and other interested parties,” highlighted Modise.

According to media reports, the 36-year-old man died early on Monday after spending seven days in a coma in the intensive care unit at the George Mukhari Provincial Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa.

It is alleged that the man was shot in the head with live ammunition. Premier Modise thanked the community and churches for the support that they gave the families that buried their loved ones over the weekend.

“Though emotions were running high, the dignified manner in which the funerals of the three victims were conducted is commendable. We will continue to give our support until the investigations are completed to ensure that the families find closure,” added Modise.
