The Office of the Premier responds to the Provincial Public Accounts Committee questions

The North West Office of the Premier yesterday attended a meeting of the Provincial Public Accounts Committee to provide responses to the Committee on the questions which the Committee had posed relating to measures that are being taken to curb irregular expenditure.

Premier Supra Mahumapelo explained to the Committee that when the 5th administration took over it took a decision to reposition the Office of the Premier from being a department to being an office that provides oversight to Departments, Municipalities and State Owned Entities.

The Office of the Premier further realised that the work done in government was manual and as part of repositioning the office a decision was taken to automate systems.

The Office of the Premier further reported that the irregular expenditure which has been incurred is cumulative, meaning that it dates back to the previous administrations.

Dr Lydia Sebego, the Director General for the North West Provincial Government reported that the Office of the Premier has investigated cases of irregular expenditure and that consequence management is being implemented to ensure non recurrence. In other instances the office of the Premier has applied for de recognition of irregular expenditure and it has been approved after the office had submitted evidence to demonstrate that the state had not incurred any loss of funds and that there was value for money.

The Office of the Premier will continue to be responsive to the Legislature Committees as part of ensuring accountability and transparency.
