Premier Mahumapelo pays tribute to Masekela - the jazz maestro

Premier Supra Mahumapelo of the North West Province says the demise of Hugh Masekela has not only robbed South Africans of a jazz genius, but a humble and kind man with a rare and amazing talent. Masekela passed on yesterday, at the age of 78.

Deeply saddened by the loss of this legend, Mahumapelo said through his music career spanning more than five decades, Masekela made a tremendous contribution in the South African freedom struggle.

“We will forever cherish the special moments he spent with us as his fans, as well as the role he played in the advancement of Afro-jazz music and the entertainment industry in general”, expressed Mahumapelo.

Sending a message of condolence to the Masekela family on behalf of the North West Provincial Government, Mahumapelo said, “As we all mourn the death of Bra Hugh, we find solace in the knowledge that, his was a virtuous, active and well-spent life, which was dedicated to not only entertaining the world, but developing and unleashing young artists’ talent. We pray that the family may be comforted during this time of grief. May Bra Hugh’s soul rest in eternal peace.
