Premier Nomvula Mokonyane on Gauteng 2013 matric results

Gauteng pass rate on the up and up

The matric Class of 2013 in Gauteng achieved a pass rate of 87 %, marking an increase of 3.1% on the results of 2012 and indicating a massive increase on the results of 2009 which was just over 60%.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane speaking at the official announcement of the provincial results today, said “The Gauteng Provincial Government takes pride in all the learners who sat for the 2013 matric exams. Today we celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2013 and we are here to say to our young people that you have made us proud.

“The province has seen a steady improvement with its annual matric results and this evoked a special mention from the SA Institute for Race Relations in its December 2013 statistical report, which states that in South Africa, it is Sedibeng that has the highest proportion of people aged 20 years and older who have obtained a Grade 12 certificate.”

Sedibeng is also the best performing district with in the country with a 90.7% pass rate. The Gauteng Province had committed to achieving a pass rate of 80% by 2014, but this target was reached ahead of schedule as early as 2011.

“The Gauteng Provincial Government recognises the collective efforts of parents, teachers, school governing bodies, teacher associations and government in attaining a convincing provincial pass rate of 87%, said Mokonyane.

“This achievement is made sweeter when we review our overall pass rate in Maths at 74%, Maths Literacy at 94% and our overall pass rate in Science at 76%. It is important to note that the number of learners from township schools who passed Maths and Science with 100% increased from one leaner in 2012 to four learners in 2013.

We are also proud of the fact that schools performing below 60% decreased from 84 schools in 2012 to only 43 schools in 2013, added Mokonyane. The Top 3, Grade 12 learners will be awarded bursaries and the province will again allocate bursaries to the top Grade 12 performers from no-fee schools.

“This year, we will award a record number of 4 000 bursaries to Grade 12 learners from no- fee schools. We encourage our learners to take up these opportunities, as well as the large number of bursary opportunities that the private sector is making available,” said Mokonyane.

Her parting words to the class of 2013 were words of encouragement. “I would like to congratulate you for a job well done and I would like to challenge you to embrace prospects of a future that has an abundance of opportunities for you.”
