Premier launches the second biggest mixed income project in Gauteng

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said the Savanna City mixed income housing development will integrate the communities from all colours to demonstrate the true rainbow nation.

Premier Nomvula Mokonyane launched the Savanna City mixed income housing development today, 20 November 2013, north- west of Meyerton. The project will comprise of about 18 691 mixed housing structures which include RDP, bonded and Finance Linked Individual Subsidy (FLISP) houses.

At least 6400 RDP houses will be built for the beneficiaries from the informal settlements on the western part of Midvaal and South of Johannesburg. Construction of 494 houses (first phase) to commence April 2014.

Speaking at the launch Mokonyane said they cannot run away from the fact that apartheid has done immense damage to the lives of many South Africans, particularly the Black majority. “The apartheid spatial planning has left many people without proper homes, and threw them away far from economic opportunities,” said Mokonyane.

She said few years ago government adopted the Breaking New Ground (BNG) strategy in responding to the human settlement needs of our country. “Through the BNG strategy we started building mixed housing developments with aim to bridge the racial divide and to ensure that all communities live together in harmony where they access all services equally and conveniently,” said Mokonyane.

Savanna mixed housing development will join the success stories of Cosmo City, Olivenhoutbosch, Chief Mogale and so on.

Mokonyane said there are lessons learned from projects like Cosmo City as it was a pilot project. “I am glad that the developer of Cosmo City Basil Read will also be leading this project. I hope that with the knowledge and experience in project management, especially of this magnitude, you will once again deliver Savanna with great quality and on time,” said Mokonyane.

The Premier said despite all these service delivery protests, which will never succeed in tarnishing their successes, ordinary people in their millions continue to live quality lives in Gauteng and benefit extensively in all government programmes.

As a mixed and integrated housing development, Savanna will afford residents access to all amenities and infrastructure. All services and facilities will be easily accessible through walking & public transport. These include: 16 Schools, 400 ha of conservation area, Public open spaces, Clinics, Churches, Recreational and social facilities, Commercial & retail opportunities
