Premier David Makhura mourns passing of Minister Collins Chabane and protectors

Gauteng Premier, Mr David Makhura, on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government extends condolences to the family of the Minister of Public Service and Administration, Collins Chabane.

Minister Chabane and his protectors were involved in car accident in Limpopo in the early hours of Sunday, 15 March 2015. Chabane was born on 15 April in 1960, in Xikundu village, Limpopo province.

"We learnt with shock of the untimely passing of Minister Chabane and his two protectors. On behalf of all people in the Gauteng City Region, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, the African National Congress and all the people of South Africa. In him we lost a humble servant of the people who always excelled in positions of responsibility assigned to him. We also extend our condolences to families of his protectors, who were members of the SAPS, Sergeant Lesiba Sekele and Sergeant Lawrence Lentsoane," said Premier Makhura.

Mr Chabane played a significant role as a member of the African National Congress in the fight against apartheid. Like many of our struggle heroes he went into exile, joined Umkhonto we Sizwe and was imprisoned in Robben Island for terrorism. He has been a long serving member of the ANC's national executive committee until his untimely death.

He continued to serve our people after the dawn of democracy, in 1994 when he served as a member of the first democratic parliament. He later served as an MEC in various departments in the Limpopo Provincial Government. In 2009 he was appointed as the Minister of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation. He was currently serving as Minister of Public Service and Administration. He will always be remembered as a passionate musician, who played harmonica and released two CDs with his group called Movement. He was also an avid golfer who was committed to the development of the sport in the country.
