Police on Operation Fiela in Northern Cape

Operation Fiela yields positive results in the Northern Cape

The two day nationwide Operation Fiela held on Thursday, 30 July 2015 and Friday 31 July 2015 has yielded positive results throughout the province. South African Police Service (SAPS) members and other relevant government departments as well as provincial and municipal law enforcement agencies braved the cold weather conditions in the Province to form part of this integrated operation.

The operations focused on illicit drugs, contraband/illegal goods and products, second hand dealers, hijacked and condemned buildings, unlicensed businesses, illegal firearms and ammunition and other related offences. There was a high police visibility in all stations areas. Road blocks and stop and search operations contributed to the success. Many suspects were arrested for dealing in or possession of drugs and were apprehended at the roadblocks. The arrested suspects will be appearing in court on Monday, 3 August 2015.

The following successes were achieved during the operation:

No of arrests:

  • 134 (theft, housebreaking, possession/dealing in drugs, drinking in public, Fraud, counterfeit goods, illegal dealing in liquor and illicit cigarettes)
  • 22 (undocumented persons)
  • 33 (traffic fines)

The ‘clean up’ operation was well accepted by the community and the businesses. Police were complimented at the roadblocks and drivers indicated that they would like to see more of these operations taking place. Operation Fiela is an initiative that aims to ensure that the people in the Northern Cape Province are and feel safe.
