Police on Operation Fiela in Free State

 Operation Fiela nets 1626 in Free State

Operation Fiela, the nationwide operation aimed to rid our country of, inter alia, illegal weapons, drug dens, prostitution rings and other illegal activities, continues to yield positive results in the Free State.

A total number of 1626 people have been arrested during joint operations that were conducted in all the policing clusters in the Free State since the beginning of October 2015 up to the early hours this morning. The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, robbery aggravating, house robbery, business robbery, carjacking, rape, assault GBH, robbery with a weapon other than a firearm, drug related crimes, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal possession of firearm, undocumented persons, etc.

The following items were confiscated: 12 x firearms, 78 x ammunitions, 201 x dangerous weapons (eg. knives), 14 x vehicles (stolen vehicles recovered), 140kg of Dagga, 1 Ecstasy tablets, 3grams of Nyaope, 80 Mandrax tablets, 500grams of precious metals and 2539 items of Counterfeit Goods.

A total of 1773 fines were issued during operation for offences in terms of the Traffic Act and Municipal bylaws.

“We will continue to rid our communities of criminal activities to ensure that our province remains the safest in the country”, said the Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, Lieutenant General Thabethe Mpembe.
