Patients urged to honour appointments

The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development would like to urge members of the public to adhere to their appointments date issued at health facilities in the province to avoid complications and to ensure quality healthcare.

The department has noted with concern that patients often miss their scheduled clinical appointments thus making it difficult for proper treatment and healthcare.

The department is currently dealing with a case of a patient who was admitted at Kalafong hospital after he was involved in a car accident. Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient was immediately put on treatment at orthopaedics department, including pain injections, antibiotics, bed rest, wound care and patient education regarding condition and treatment plan was explained.

However the patient did not honour his appointment date and only presented himself 14 days after the scheduled appointment at Kalafong Hospital. The patient’s condition has since complicated and he developed maggots on his wound.

“Patients should at all times try to comply and honour the clinical plan and appointment schedules as required for their different conditions to ensure speedy recovery," said MEC Mekgwe.

The department would like to reiterate that it is fully committed to ensure best possible recovery of all patients who present themselves to our public health facilities.
