Parliament's programme in honour of Mandela swings to full gear

Parliament’s programme in honour of the late former President Nelson Mandela starts in earnest tomorrow with the Presiding Officers expected to lead the placement of flowers at a designated space within the precinct.

Speaker of the National Assembly (NA), Mr Max Sisulu, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Mr Mninwa Mahlangu and their respective deputies, Ms NomaIndia Mfeketo and Ms Thandi Memela are expected to also sign the book of condolences after the event.

A Joint Sitting of Parliament starts at 14h00 until about 16h30. Family members from the Mandela and Sisulu families and members of the diplomatic corps are expected to attend. Former Presidents Mbeki and De Klerk have been invited.

Proceedings in the Chamber will be beamed live at the Grand Parade as the main public viewing place.

Members of the public who visit the precinct during the week-long programme will get an opportunity to sign the book of condolences and paint their messages on a special “Wall of Remembrance”. The wall is part of an exhibition called ‘Madiba Speaks’ which opens tomorrow in the Parliamentary precinct.

The exhibition includes video and still photographic imagery depicting Madiba’s speeches and achievements in a transformed and democratic Parliament.

Throughout the week Parliament’s doors will open daily from 08:00 until 20:00. Members of the public who wish to visit during this period are required to bring their ID document, passport or driver’s licence for access.

Other highlights include:

  • Special publications about Madiba
  • An opportunity to sign a book of condolences and place flowers at the wall of remembrance
