Parliament welcomes new Auditor-General, Mr Kimi Makwetu

Parliament welcomes the appointment of South Africa’s new Auditor-General Mr Thembekile Makwetu and wishes him well in the crucial position of Auditor General of South Africa.

The Office of the Auditor-General, one of the Institutions Supporting Democracy, has a critical role to play in our developing democracy.

In the words of former Auditor-General Mr Terence Nombembe: “Public sector audits go beyond merely expressing an opinion on the financial statements. When we audit the public sector, we also comment on the effectiveness of key management processes and give feedback on compliance with laws and regulations.”

The Presidency yesterday announced Mr Makwetu’s appointment following the recommendation from the National Assembly that he be appointed.

Mr Makwetu’s appointment is effective from 1 December 2013 for a period of seven years and follows that of Mr Terence Nombembe, whose seven-year term of office ended on 30 November 2013.

On 6 November, Parliament thanked Mr Nombembe for his sterling service at a farewell attended also by Mr Makwetu.

Mr Makwetu, a chartered accountant by profession, served as Deputy Auditor General for six years. He matriculated from St John’s College in Umtata in 1984 and has a Bachelor of Social Science degree from the University of Cape Town, a Bachelor of Accounting Science from the University of South Africa and a Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy from the University of Natal.
