Parliament welcomes announcement of Inter-Ministerial Committee on Immigration Regulations

Inter-Ministerial Committee on Immigration Regulations welcomed

The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs welcomes the announcement by the President of the Republic of South Africa of the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Immigration Regulations to look into the unintended consequences experienced as a result of the implementation of the immigration regulations.

The Committee views this intervention as essential, especially in light of the strong concerns raised by the tourism sector of the economy. The Committee is further appreciative that the matter will be led by the Deputy President, highlighting the significance placed on this matter.

The Committee is hopeful that the Inter-Ministerial Committee will look at all allegations of unintended consequences within the tourism sector and deal decisively with those that are proved to be a consequence of the implementation of the immigration regulations. The Committee calls upon the tourism sector to provide information to the task team whenever called upon to do so, in support of the work of the task team.

However, the Committee cautions against any attempt to compromise the security of the country and of our children.

The Committee will monitor the work of the task team and make relevant input as required to ensure lasting and comprehensive solutions to proven unintended consequences as a result of the implementation of the immigration regulations.
