Parliament on submissions made on gazetted legislation

Trade and Industry Committee clarifies issue of submissions

The Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry calls out to government departments to gather submissions made on gazetted legislation.

Committee Chairperson Ms Joanmariae Fubbs says interested parties who want to add their voice to draft legislation should do so with the Committee, irrespective of whether they have made submissions on the same legislation to the relevant department on gazetted laws. Submissions made to the department will not find their way to Parliament.

"There seems to be some confusion in the public space that Parliament and the Executive are one. There is a difference between the State and the Legislature. The Constitution has clearly identified the separation of powers between the three arms of government, namely the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary. Parliament oversees the Executive,” says Ms Fubbs.

The Chairperson appeals to the public to submit their inputs directly to Parliament to ensure that they could effectively participate in public hearings. The Committee is currently holding public hearings on the National Credit Amendment Bill.
