Parliament declares May Africa Month

This year's month of May is one of the busiest months in our national calendar. The country will hold its local government elections on 18 May, and immediately after the elections we will be observing Africa Day on 25 May.

Parliament will be part of all these events. It will especially join millions across Africa and the world who will celebrate the Africa Day. The institution will have different activities including debates to mark the day. Some of the planned activities will take place prior to 25 May. Accordingly, Parliament has declared May Africa Month.

This year’s theme for Africa Day is: “African renewal, advancement and development.”

The aim of the event is to reflect on and capture the rich history of Africa through dialogue, debate, sports, arts and culture, and the significance of the day.

This day is the day in which African people and states commemorate the creation of the organisation of the African Union in 1963. The continental organisation was later renamed African Union in July 2002. It is the day that symbolises Africa’s unity, commitment to peace, democracy and economic development.

On this day, Parliament will celebrate the continent’s achievements and look at challenges that include poverty and underdevelopment. It should also reflect on its involvement in regional, continental and multilateral bodies such as Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum, Pan-African Parliament and Inter-Parliamentary Union.
