Parliament commends the committee and officials for successful public hearings on Gas Amendment Bill

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy, Mr Sahlulele Luzipo, has thanked the committee and the officials of Parliament for the success of the public hearings on the Gas Amendment Bill which the committee has successfully conducted in seven provinces.

Mr Luzipo said that the committee and the officials displayed outstanding commitment to the duty at hand when they travelled across four provinces without a break, in ensuring that ordinary South Africans in the provinces get an opportunity to express their views on the Gas Amendment Bills.

The public hearings on the Bill began on 13 November 2021, covering eleven districts and five metropolitan municipalities across the country.

The districts that were covered are: Mpumalanga’s Ehlanzeni and Nkangala districts; KwaZulu-Natal’s King Cetshwayo; Eastern Cape’s Amathole and Saraah Bartman districts; Western Cape’s Central Karoo, Garden Route and West Coast districts and Free State’s John Taolo Gaetsewe and Frances Baart districts.

The metropolitan municipalities were: The City of Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Ethekwini, Nelson Mandela Bay and the City of Mangaung.

Mr Luzipo thanked members of the public who participated in the public hearings. He described their inputs as valuable and assured them that all their inputs will be considered during committee deliberations on the Bill. He also thanked them for their cooperation.

“The committee conducted public hearings before deliberating on the Bill in order to first allow members of the public to express their views. Now, we can confidently say that our deliberations will be more meaningful, following this process,” said Mr Luzipo.

The committee will develop and adopt a report on all the public hearings on the Bill.

“This committee report will be the basis for deliberations, because it will establish a common understanding on the true reflection of all the public hearings on the Bill,” added Mr Luzipo.
