Parliament calls for Criminal Matters Amendment Bill submissions

The Select Committee on Security and Justice has called for written submissions on the Criminal Matters Amendment Bill.

The aim of the Bill is, among other things, to amend the Criminal Procedure Act, 1977, so as to regulate bail in respect of essential infrastructure-related offences and to regulate the imposition of discretionary minimum sentences for essential infrastructure-related offences.

It further seeks to create a new offence relating to essential infrastructure and to provide for matters connected therewith. The Bill specifies between privately and publicly owned infrastructures providing or distributing basic services such as energy, transport, communications, water and sanitation to the public.

The Committee has appealed to all sectors of society and the public at large to make inputs on the draft amendments. Submissions must be received by no later than 20 November 2015.

Submissions and enquiries must be directed to Mr G Dixon, Select Committee on Security and Justice, 3rd Floor, 90 Plein Street, Office 133, Cape Town, 8000 or emailed to gdixon@parliament.gov.za or faxed to 086 658 9371.
