Parliament adopts Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Bill

Committee Adopts Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Bill

The Select Committee on Social Services today agreed to the amended Medicines and Related Substances Bill [B6D-2014] after deliberations and considerations. This paves the way for the Amendment Bill to be forwarded to the National Council of Provinces for concurrence.

The Bill seeks to amend the Medicines and Related Substance Act, 101 of 1965 and the Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Bill, 72 of 2008, so as to strengthen the current medicines regulatory authority, the Medicines Control Council (MCC), through the establishment of a new authority, the South African Health Product Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), define certain expressions and to delete or amend certain definitions, and to effect certain technical corrections to put the Act in line with current trends.

All provincial delegations voted in favour of the Amendment Bill.
