North West Traditional Affairs on traditional council elections

MEC Tlhape urges communities to partake in traditional council elections

It’s all systems go for the election of traditional councils which will take place tomorrow, 25 January 2014 in 52 traditional councils.

The North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Manketsi Tlhape, said has urged all traditional communities in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, Ngaka Modiri Molema and Bojanala Platinum District to go out in their numbers and vote for their preferred candidates.

“I want to take this opportunity to plead with our traditional communities to take part in shaping the future of their local communities by participating in the elections. The election process is not just a constitutional mandate but it’s also a cornerstone of our democracy and we are confident that the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) has the necessary capacity.

Traditional council elections should bring back stability in our traditional communities especially where there has been a constant conflict”, she said.

The Traditional Leadership and Governance Act of 2005 provides for the establishment of traditional councils in traditional communities.
