North West tackles HIV and AIDS pandemic in schools

North West Premier, Mme Thandi Modise says that no effort should be spared to ensure that educators and learners are equipped with the requisite skills, attitude and competencies to contain the spread of HIV and AIDS, and protect themselves against contradicting the disease.

Five thousand two hundred and eighty nine (5 289) learners underwent health assessments while the Kick TB Campaign reached 2910 primary school learners across the North West Province since the beginning of  the current financial year, North West MEC for Eduication Raymond Elisha reported to Exco on Wednesday.

Programmes put in place to focus on HIV prevention strategies to provide care and support to learners include training of 497 educators as Level 1 first aiders and training of 316 educators and 33 child care coordinators in counseling, substance abuse and sexuality.

Two hundred and thirty six schools are being monitored across the province to ensure proper implementation after Life Skills HIV and AIDS advocacy workshops were conducted for 86 District officials, 469 principals, teachers, School Governing Bodies, 737 parents and 1566 learners.

The Departments of Education, Health, Social Development Women Children and People with disabilities, Agriculture, Home Affairs, SASSA and SAPS are collaborating in the delivery of the programme to support Orphans and Vulnerable Children.

The Department of Education’s Care and Support for Teaching and Learning Unit is working with communities to develop and sustain food gardens at schools.
