North West learners reach climax of road safety debate

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa expects "sparks to fly" at the fourth provincial road safety debate competition to be hosted by his department at the Rio Conference Centre in Klerksdorp on Friday.

The primary objective of debate competition which involves grade 9, 10 and 11 high school learners is to reduce pedestrian fatalities on public roads and instill a culture of safe road usage.

The district that produced the 2009 provincial and national road safety debate champions, Ngaka Modiri Molema, will present a combined team of learners from Zeerust Combined, Nkabetse Thuto and Motswedi High Schools to defend the provincial title that the district won last year.

The Ngaka Modiri Molema district team will lock horns with JM Ntsime High School (Bojanala Platinum District), Potchefstroom Secondary School(Dr Kenneth Kaunda District) and Tyger Kloof High School that won the district eliminations held on Monday at Dr Segomotsi Mompati district.

The 2010 provincial road safety debate is co-hosted by the Department of Public Safety in partnership with Dr Kenneth Kaunda district municipality and City of Matlosana local municipality.

It is sponsored by among others the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), British Petroleum South Africa (BPSA), Bakwena Toll, Magalieswater, Rustenburg Platinum Mine and North West FM.
